Northumbria University – Students Union

Burlington Waugh were asked to provide a controls solution for the Northumbria University Students Union after several maintenance visits had revealed lighting problems throughout the building, a second contractor had been chosen to replace all the luminaires in the building and we were tasked with working alongside this contractor to produce a design that would complement the lighting strategy and give the energy savings that justified the expense of the works.

The building contains staff offices alongside several venue spaces and bar/restaurants therefor there needed to be a managed system in certain areas and a standalone system elsewhere.

Local Scene Select systems were installed in each venue space allowing the customisable programming these provide, DALI light fittings were installed by the electrical contractor so SDBC300 3 Universe DALI controllers were utilised throughout and linked with Ethernet gateways, SUS360C sensors were added to these spaces and everything was able to be overridden with control from the union reception using a DTP170 touchscreen.

Office spaces, storerooms, staff corridors and WC’s had Ex-Or LightSpot HD sensors installed providing stand-alone DALI dimming and relay switching depending on the needs of the space.

Meeting rooms were controlled with local scene plates or retractive switches connected to Ex-Or’s Connects Digital Lighting Control Modules.

As part of our design the entire front facia of the building (3 floors) was able to be lit as one to provide a welcoming setting for Students attending the many functions the building houses.
