Project Description

Stirling Castle – Argyle & Sutherland Highlander Museum

Burlington Waugh’s were asked to propose a lighting control system for this project by Harley Haddow Consultants in June 2018.

As our engineers had previously worked in the Royal Palace it was a great opportunity to work on the neighbouring building with-in the castle walls, and in every installation in a building of this type it’s invariably the castle walls which provide the biggest problems, any cable route no matter how narrow must be agreed in advance before any works are carried out.

Track Lighting was specified in several galleries over three floors, DALI house-lighting, architectural feature lighting and both function spaces and staff offices were to be catered for.

With these parameters in mind the system was designed around Helvar’s Digidim control system, Both single and double 485M dimmer chassis were installed in riser areas local to galleries, LED spots were dimmed using the Trailing edge capabilities of the UNI8 universal dimmer module and all other lighting was linked to a Helvar DALI ‘subnet’ or switched using a Helvar 492 DALI relay.

Cleaners and security setting are chosen by keyswitches and Helvar 444 Input devices and the entire museum is able to be run from the Helvar 9242 Touchscreen providing both timeclock functionality and scene selection.

Display cabinet switching was included in the lighting control using Burlington Waugh pre-wired custom enclosures.

Each area was linked using a single ethernet cable, allowing the entire system to communicate.
